Drive Sound Analysis

The purpose of having sound effects and music in a film is to mainly bring the film to life and make it feel realistic, good sound effects and music can really help to cement this feeling but bad and unnatural and off sync sound effects and music can really ruin this feel of the film.
The start of Drive is a dramatic suspenseful kind of cop chase, with Ryan Gosling getting hired by two robbers as their getaway vehicle, but he has a strict rule that the crime has to be done within five minutes otherwise he will leave without them.
The scene starts with a very low based kind of heart beat drum base, it starts of very loud to build up the suspense and tension in the scene and gradually goes down when Ryan Gosling drive up to the fence, keeping the soundtrack on keeps up the suspense. When Gosling puts the watch on the steering wheel It gives the sense that time is running out  for the two robbers. The sound effect of the him putting and setting the timer on the watch sounds slightly a bit louder than it should be but this could be by not having any many other sound effects in the scene  makes the watch sound louder and clearer.
The basketball game on the radio is on from the start of the scene and you can hear it quite clearly and it dies down around the same time as the music but it is not as clear as before, he turns the radio up when he turns on the police scanner but the police scanner drowns it out. The radio builds up no real suspense  or significance until later on in the film when Gosling escapes from the cops, the radio gives us information that their is a basketball game on at the same time he is doing this robbery but all the radio really does is just adds to the existing sounds in the background. The purpose of the police radio scanner is to inform Goslings character and the audience what the police are doing and builds suspense for the audience not knowing if the police are going to catch Gosling, around when the first robber gets in the car the radio scanner informs us that there is a police car 2 minutes away from the robbery this builds tension and suspense not knowing if the police are going to catch them or even if gosling well drive off leaving the other robber, then when the police radio says the description of the car and that its a possible suspect this builds up the tension and suspense even more because the police know what car they are using. At the end of the street a police car with search light appears this really kicks in the suspense and tension for the audience not knowing if the the police will find the car or not, but right at the end of the scene when the police radio says that the street is clear this immediately breaks the tension and suspense because Gosling has got away from the police.
There is hardly any talking from the characters in the scene so it adds more emphasis on the sound effects and makes them more effective. Other sound effects in the scene is a police siren adds a little bit of tension cause you know that the police are coming, the other effects in the scene just tie the scene together like the gunshot, burglar alarm, car door open sound, fence opening, car engine and the robbers slamming the door open
